Thrive at Sir Martin Frobisher Academy

Supporting Every Child to Thrive

At Sir Martin Frobisher Academy, we are committed to supporting the emotional well-being and development of every child. We understand that children learn best when they feel safe, supported, and ready to engage with the world around them.

Our Thrive approach places well-being at the heart of school life, helping pupils to develop the social and emotional skills they need to succeed both in and beyond the classroom.

What is Thrive?

Thrive is a whole-school approach to supporting children’s social and emotional development. It is based on a deep understanding of how children grow, learn, and form relationships.

Through Thrive, we identify pupils’ emotional needs and provide targeted support to help them build confidence, resilience, and positive relationships. With the growing crisis in children and young people’s mental health, Thrive is needed to support children with problems in behaviour, attendance and attainment.

Our Thrive Approach

At Sir Martin Frobisher Academy, Thrive is embedded throughout the school. All staff are committed to creating a calm, supportive, and nurturing environment where every child feels valued and understood.

We focus on:

  • Building strong, positive relationships
  • Supporting emotional regulation and self-awareness
  • Developing confidence and resilience
  • Helping children feel safe, secure, and ready to learn

How Thrive Supports Pupils

Thrive support may be delivered in a variety of ways, including:

  • Small group sessions focused on specific needs
  • Individual support for pupils who need additional help

Activities are carefully planned and may include:

  • Play-based learning and creative activities
  • Talking and listening opportunities
  • Role play and storytelling
  • Relaxation and mindfulness techniques

These approaches help children to understand their feelings, manage challenges, and build positive relationships with others.

Identifying and Meeting Needs

We use the Thrive approach to assess children’s social and emotional development and identify any gaps or barriers to learning. This allows us to provide the right support at the right time.

Progress is regularly reviewed to ensure that each child is making positive steps forward.

A Whole-School Ethos

Thrive is not just an intervention – it is part of our whole-school ethos. It underpins our behaviour approach and helps to create a positive, respectful, and inclusive school community.

All pupils benefit from:

  • Consistent routines and clear expectations
  • A calm and supportive learning environment
  • Opportunities to develop social and emotional skills

Working in Partnership with Parents

We believe that strong partnerships with parents and carers are essential. We work closely with families to support children’s well-being and share strategies that can be used at home.

Parents and carers can support their child by:

  • Talking openly about feelings and emotions
  • Encouraging positive routines
  • Supporting strategies shared by the school

The Impact of Thrive

Through Thrive, children at Sir Martin Frobisher Academy:

  • Develop confidence and self-esteem
  • Improve their ability to manage emotions
  • Build positive relationships with others
  • Become more engaged and ready to learn
