Year 1 at Sir Martin Frobisher Academy
Welcome to Year 1
Year 1 at Sir Martin Frobisher Academy is an exciting and important stage in your child’s learning journey. Building on the strong foundations established in Reception, we support children as they transition into more structured learning while maintaining a nurturing, engaging, and stimulating environment.
Our Learning Approach
In Year 1, we blend structured teaching with creative, hands-on experiences to ensure every child develops a love of learning. Our curriculum is carefully designed to be both challenging and enjoyable, helping pupils grow in confidence, independence, and curiosity.
We focus on:
- Developing strong reading, writing, and phonics skills
- Building confidence in mathematics through practical and problem-solving activities
- Encouraging creativity through art, music, and imaginative play
- Promoting curiosity through science and topic-based learning
The Curriculum
Our broad and balanced curriculum includes:
English
Children continue their phonics journey and begin to read more fluently. Writing develops from simple sentences into more structured pieces, including stories, descriptions, and basic non-fiction.
Mathematics
Pupils build on their understanding of numbers, addition, subtraction, and begin exploring multiplication and division through practical activities.
Science & Topic Work
Through engaging topics, children explore the world around them, learning about seasons, materials, animals, and their environment.
Foundation Subjects
We offer a rich curriculum including art, design technology, computing, music, and physical education to support well-rounded development.
Phonics and Reading
Reading is at the heart of everything we do. Children take part in daily phonics sessions and guided reading activities. We encourage reading both in school and at home to build confidence and fluency.
Supporting Your Child
We believe that strong partnerships between school and home are key to success. Parents and carers can support their child by:
- Reading regularly at home
- Practising phonics and spelling
- Encouraging curiosity and discussion about learning
A Supportive Environment
Our Year 1 classroom is welcoming and inclusive, where every child is valued. We promote kindness, respect, and resilience, helping children to develop both academically and socially.
Preparing for the Future
Year 1 is a vital step in preparing children for the rest of their primary education. By the end of the year, pupils are more confident learners, ready to take on new challenges in Year 2.
