Year 2 at Sir Martin Frobisher Academy

Welcome to Year 2

Year 2 is a key milestone in your child’s primary education at Sir Martin Frobisher Academy. As the final year of Key Stage 1, it is a time for consolidating learning, building independence, and preparing pupils for the transition into Key Stage 2.

We provide a supportive and inspiring environment where children are encouraged to take pride in their achievements and develop a positive attitude towards learning.

Our Learning Approach

In Year 2, we continue to nurture a love of learning while increasing expectations and encouraging greater independence. Lessons are engaging, purposeful, and designed to challenge all learners.

We focus on:

  • Developing fluent reading and confident writing
  • Strengthening mathematical understanding and problem-solving skills
  • Encouraging critical thinking and curiosity
  • Supporting independence and resilience in learning

The Curriculum

Our broad and balanced curriculum includes:

English
Children become more fluent readers and begin to read with greater expression and understanding. Writing develops further, with a focus on punctuation, grammar, and spelling. Pupils write a range of texts, including stories, reports, and simple explanations.

Mathematics
Pupils deepen their understanding of number, place value, addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. They also explore measures, shape, and simple data handling.

Science & Topic Work
Children explore topics such as living things and their habitats, uses of everyday materials, and plants. Learning is hands-on and encourages investigation and questioning.

Foundation Subjects
A rich curriculum continues through art, design technology, computing, music, and physical education, helping children develop a wide range of skills and interests.

Assessment and Progress

Year 2 includes important end-of-Key Stage 1 assessments (SATs). These are carried out in a calm and supportive way, helping teachers understand each child’s progress and identify next steps in learning.

Reading and Home Learning

Reading remains a priority in Year 2. Children are encouraged to read regularly at home and in school to build fluency, comprehension, and enjoyment.

Parents and carers can support their child by:

  • Listening to them read regularly
  • Supporting spelling and homework activities
  • Encouraging independence and responsibility

A Supportive Environment

Our classroom is inclusive and welcoming, where every child feels safe and valued. We continue to promote positive behaviour, teamwork, and respect for others.

Preparing for Key Stage 2

Year 2 prepares children for the transition into Key Stage 2 by developing confidence, independence, and a strong foundation in core subjects. By the end of the year, pupils are ready to embrace new challenges and opportunities in Year 3.
