Art & Design Curriculum at Sir Martin Frobisher Academy

Inspiring Creativity and Expression

At Sir Martin Frobisher Academy, we believe that Art & Design plays a vital role in developing creativity, confidence, and self-expression. Our aim is to inspire pupils to explore their ideas, experiment with a range of materials, and develop their artistic skills.

We provide a rich and engaging curriculum that encourages children to express themselves and take pride in their creative achievements.

Our Approach to Art & Design

We follow the Kapow Primary Art & Design scheme to support high-quality teaching and learning across the school. This ensures clear progression of skills and knowledge from Early Years through to Year 6.

Through this approach, pupils:

  • Develop a range of artistic techniques and skills
  • Explore different materials and media
  • Learn about famous artists and designers
  • Reflect on and evaluate their own work
  • Build confidence in expressing their ideas

Lessons are practical, creative, and designed to inspire imagination.

Art & Design in EYFS

In the Early Years Foundation Stage, Art & Design is part of the “Expressive Arts and Design” area of learning.

Children are encouraged to:

  • Explore a variety of materials and tools
  • Experiment with colour, texture, and shape
  • Express their ideas through art and creativity
  • Develop fine motor skills

Learning is play-based and focuses on exploration and enjoyment.

  • Use drawing, painting, and sculpture techniques
  • Experiment with different materials
  • Develop control and precision

They are introduced to a range of artists and styles.

Art & Design in Key Stage 2

Children learn to:

  • Use a variety of techniques with increasing control
  • Develop ideas through sketchbooks

Pupils are encouraged to take creative risks and develop their own artistic style.

Developing Artistic Skills

Our Art & Design curriculum focuses on key areas, including:

  • Painting
  • Sculpture
  • Printing
  • Textiles

Pupils develop skills progressively, building confidence and mastery over time.

Learning About Artists

Children are introduced to a wide range of artists, designers, and craftspeople from different cultures and time periods. This helps them to:

  • Understand different artistic styles
  • Gain inspiration for their own work
  • Appreciate the value of art in society

Creativity Across the Curriculum

Art & Design is often linked with other subjects, allowing pupils to apply their creativity in meaningful contexts. This supports a well-rounded and engaging learning experience.

Supporting Art at Home

Parents and carers can support their child’s creativity by:

  • Encouraging drawing, painting, and making
  • Visiting galleries or exploring art online
  • Talking about colours, shapes, and designs
  • Celebrating their child’s creative efforts

Assessment and Progress

Art & Design is assessed through ongoing observation and evaluation of pupils’ work. Teachers consider:

  • Development of skills and techniques
  • Creativity and expression
  • Ability to reflect on and improve work

This ensures that all pupils make progress and develop confidence in their abilities.
