Computing Curriculum at Sir Martin Frobisher Academy

Preparing Pupils for a Digital World

At Sir Martin Frobisher Academy, we believe that computing is an essential part of modern education. Our aim is to equip pupils with the knowledge and skills they need to use technology safely, creatively, and effectively.

We provide a broad and engaging computing curriculum that develops confidence, problem-solving skills, and digital understanding.

Our Approach to Computing

We follow the Kapow Primary computing scheme to support high-quality teaching and learning across the school. This ensures clear progression of knowledge and skills from Early Years through to Year 6.

Through this approach, pupils:

  • Develop computational thinking and problem-solving skills
  • Learn to use technology purposefully and safely
  • Understand how digital systems work
  • Create and debug simple programs
  • Become responsible digital citizens

Lessons are practical, engaging, and relevant to real-life contexts.

Computing in EYFS

In the Early Years Foundation Stage, computing is introduced through exploration and play.

Children are encouraged to:

  • Use simple technology and devices
  • Explore cause and effect
  • Develop early problem-solving skills
  • Understand how technology is used in everyday life

Learning is hands-on and supports curiosity and exploration.

Computing in Key Stage 1

In Years 1 and 2, pupils begin to develop basic computing skills.

Children learn to:

  • Understand what algorithms are and how they are used
  • Create and debug simple programs
  • Use technology to create, organise, and store digital content
  • Use technology safely and responsibly

Computing in Key Stage 2

In Key Stage 2, pupils build on their knowledge and develop more advanced skills.

Children learn to:

  • Design, write, and debug programs
  • Understand computer networks and the internet
  • Use a range of software and tools
  • Collect, analyse, and present data
  • Develop a deeper understanding of online safety

Pupils are encouraged to think logically and solve problems independently.

Online Safety

Online safety is a key part of our computing curriculum. Pupils are taught to:

  • Use technology safely and responsibly
  • Protect their personal information
  • Recognise risks and know how to respond
  • Show respect when communicating online

We aim to ensure that all pupils are confident and safe when using technology.

Digital Creativity

Pupils are given opportunities to use technology creatively by:

  • Creating digital content such as presentations, animations, and videos
  • Using coding platforms and software
  • Exploring different ways to communicate ideas

This helps children to develop creativity alongside technical skills.

Supporting Computing at Home

Parents and carers can support their child by:

  • Encouraging safe and responsible use of technology
  • Exploring educational apps and websites
  • Talking about online safety
  • Supporting digital homework tasks

Assessment and Progress

Computing is assessed through ongoing classroom activities. Teachers consider:

  • Understanding of key concepts
  • Ability to apply skills
  • Problem-solving and creativity

This ensures that all pupils make progress and develop confidence in computing.
