Modern Foreign Languages (MFL) at Sir Martin Frobisher Academy
Inspiring a Love of Languages
At Sir Martin Frobisher Academy, we believe that learning a foreign language opens the door to new cultures, experiences, and opportunities. Our aim is to inspire pupils to develop an interest in languages and build confidence in speaking, listening, reading, and writing.
We provide an engaging and interactive curriculum that encourages curiosity and enjoyment in language learning.
Our Approach to MFL
We follow the Kapow Primary Modern Foreign Languages scheme to support high-quality teaching and learning across the school. This ensures clear progression of knowledge and skills throughout Key Stage 2.
Through this approach, pupils:
- Develop confidence in speaking and listening
- Build vocabulary and understanding of language structures
- Improve pronunciation and fluency
- Gain an awareness of different cultures
- Develop a foundation for future language learning
Lessons are interactive, engaging, and designed to build confidence through repetition and practice.
Language Learning in Key Stage 2
Modern Foreign Languages are taught in Key Stage 2, where pupils are introduced to a foreign language (typically Spanish)
Children learn to:
- Listen and respond to spoken language
- Speak with increasing confidence and accuracy
- Read and understand simple texts
- Write basic sentences and phrases
Topics are practical and relevant, such as greetings, numbers, colours, food, and everyday conversation.
Developing Language Skills
Our MFL Kapow curriculum focuses on four key skills:
Speaking
Pupils practise pronunciation and build confidence in speaking aloud.
Listening
Children develop their ability to understand spoken language through songs, games, and activities.
Reading
Pupils begin to recognise familiar words and phrases in written form.
Writing
Children learn to write simple words and sentences using correct spelling and structure.
Cultural Awareness
Learning a language also helps pupils to develop an understanding of other cultures. Through our MFL curriculum, children:
- Learn about traditions and customs in other countries
- Develop respect and appreciation for different cultures
- Gain a broader understanding of the world
Engaging and Interactive Learning
Lessons are designed to be fun and memorable, using:
- Songs, rhymes, and games
- Role play and conversation activities
- Visual resources and repetition
- Interactive tasks and challenges
These approaches help pupils to build confidence and enjoyment in learning a new language.
Supporting Language Learning at Home
Parents and carers can support their child by:
- Practising simple words and phrases together
- Encouraging listening to songs or videos in another language
- Talking about different countries and cultures
- Celebrating their child’s progress
Assessment and Progress
Modern Foreign Languages are assessed through ongoing classroom activities. Teachers consider:
- Speaking and listening skills
- Vocabulary development
- Reading and writing ability
This ensures that pupils make steady progress and build confidence over time.
