Science Curriculum at Sir Martin Frobisher Academy
Inspiring Curious Minds
At Sir Martin Frobisher Academy, we believe that science helps children to understand the world around them and develop a sense of curiosity and wonder. Our aim is to inspire pupils to ask questions, explore ideas, and think scientifically.
We provide a rich and engaging science curriculum that encourages investigation, discovery, and a love of learning.
Our Approach to Science
We follow the Kapow Primary science scheme to support high-quality teaching and learning across the school. This ensures clear progression of knowledge and skills from Early Years through to Year 6.
Through this approach, pupils:
- Develop a secure understanding of scientific knowledge
- Learn to work scientifically through enquiry and investigation
- Build curiosity and critical thinking skills
- Make links between science and real-life experiences
Lessons are practical, engaging, and designed to develop both knowledge and skills.
Science in EYFS
In the Early Years Foundation Stage, science is introduced through the “Understanding the World” area of learning.
Children explore:
- The natural world and seasonal changes
- Animals, plants, and habitats
- Materials and how they behave
Learning is hands-on and play-based, encouraging curiosity and exploration.
Science in Key Stage 1
In Years 1 and 2, pupils begin to develop their scientific knowledge through simple investigations and observations.
Topics include:
- Plants and animals
- Everyday materials
- Seasonal changes
Children learn to ask questions, observe closely, and begin to record their findings.
Science in Key Stage 2
In Key Stage 2, pupils deepen their understanding of scientific concepts and develop more advanced enquiry skills.
Topics include:
- Forces and magnets
- Light and sound
- Electricity
- States of matter
- Living things and their habitats
- Earth and space
- Evolution and inheritance
Pupils learn to plan investigations, make predictions, analyse results, and draw conclusions.
Working Scientifically
A key focus of our science curriculum is developing the skills needed to think and work like scientists. Pupils are taught to:
- Ask questions and make predictions
- Plan and carry out investigations
- Observe and measure accurately
- Record and present results
- Evaluate and explain findings
These skills are built progressively across all year groups.
Learning Beyond the Classroom
We enrich our science curriculum through:
- Practical experiments and investigations
- Outdoor learning opportunities
- Links to real-world science
- Cross-curricular connections
This helps pupils to see the relevance of science in everyday life.
Supporting Science at Home
Parents and carers can support their child’s interest in science by:
- Encouraging curiosity and questioning
- Exploring nature and the environment
- Talking about how things work
- Supporting homework and projects
Assessment and Progress
Science is regularly assessed to monitor pupils’ understanding and progress. Teachers use:
- Ongoing classroom assessment
- Observations of practical work
- Quizzes and knowledge checks
This ensures that all pupils are supported and challenged appropriately.
