Year 3 at Sir Martin Frobisher Academy
Welcome to Year 3
Year 3 marks an exciting new chapter as children move into Key Stage 2 at Sir Martin Frobisher Academy. This transition brings new opportunities, increased independence, and a greater depth of learning across the curriculum.
We support pupils every step of the way, ensuring they feel confident, motivated, and ready to embrace new challenges.
Our Learning Approach
In Year 3, we build on the strong foundations from Key Stage 1 while introducing more structured and independent learning. Lessons are engaging, varied, and designed to stretch and support all learners.
We focus on:
- Developing confident, fluent readers and expressive writers
- Strengthening mathematical reasoning and problem-solving
- Encouraging independence, resilience, and responsibility
- Fostering curiosity and a deeper understanding of the world
The Curriculum
Our broad and balanced curriculum includes:
English
Children continue to develop their reading skills, focusing on comprehension, inference, and vocabulary. Writing becomes more detailed and structured, with pupils exploring a range of genres including stories, reports, and persuasive texts.
Mathematics
Pupils deepen their understanding of place value, addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. They are introduced to more formal written methods and develop their reasoning and problem-solving skills.
Science & Topic Work
Children explore topics such as light, plants, forces and magnets. Lessons encourage investigation, prediction, and hands-on learning.
Foundation Subjects
The wider curriculum includes history, geography, art, design technology, computing, music, and physical education, allowing pupils to develop creativity and a broad range of skills.
Developing Independence
Year 3 places a strong emphasis on independence and organisation. Pupils are encouraged to take responsibility for their learning, manage their work, and develop positive study habits.
Reading and Home Learning
Reading remains a key priority. Children are encouraged to read regularly at home to build fluency, understanding, and enjoyment.
Parents and carers can support their child by:
- Listening to them read and discussing texts
- Supporting homework and learning tasks
- Encouraging independence and a positive attitude to learning
A Supportive Environment
We provide a welcoming and inclusive environment where every child is valued. Our classrooms promote respect, teamwork, and resilience, helping pupils grow both academically and socially.
Preparing for the Future
Year 3 is an important step in Key Stage 2, helping children adapt to new expectations and develop the skills needed for future success. By the end of the year, pupils are confident, independent learners ready to continue their journey through Key Stage 2.
