Year 4 at Sir Martin Frobisher Academy
Welcome to Year 4
Year 4 is an important stage in your child’s Key Stage 2 journey at Sir Martin Frobisher Academy. Building on the independence and skills developed in Year 3, pupils continue to grow in confidence, take on new challenges, and deepen their understanding across all areas of the curriculum.
We provide a supportive and engaging environment where every child is encouraged to achieve their best.
Our Learning Approach
In Year 4, we place a strong emphasis on independence, resilience, and developing a deeper understanding of key concepts. Lessons are carefully planned to be both challenging and enjoyable, ensuring all pupils are supported and stretched.
We focus on:
- Developing fluent and expressive reading
- Strengthening writing with greater detail, structure, and accuracy
- Building confidence and efficiency in mathematics
- Encouraging curiosity, creativity, and critical thinking
The Curriculum
Our broad and balanced curriculum includes:
English
Children continue to develop their reading comprehension skills, exploring a wide range of texts and building vocabulary. Writing becomes more structured and detailed, with a focus on grammar, punctuation, and spelling across different genres.
Mathematics
Pupils deepen their understanding of number and place value, while developing fluency in all four operations. A key focus in Year 4 is learning multiplication tables up to 12 × 12, preparing children for the national multiplication check.
Science & Topic Work
Children explore topics such as electricity, sound, and states of matter. Lessons encourage investigation, questioning, and hands-on exploration to develop scientific understanding.
Foundation Subjects
The wider curriculum includes history, geography, art, design technology, computing, music, and physical education, supporting creativity and a broad range of interests.
Multiplication Tables Check
In Year 4, pupils take part in the national Multiplication Tables Check. This is a short, online assessment designed to ensure children have a secure knowledge of their times tables, which is essential for future success in mathematics.
Developing Independence
Children are encouraged to take greater responsibility for their learning, organisation, and behaviour. We support pupils in becoming confident, independent learners who are ready to tackle new challenges.
Reading and Home Learning
Reading continues to be a key priority. Pupils are encouraged to read regularly at home and discuss what they have read to develop comprehension skills.
Parents and carers can support their child by:
- Practising times tables regularly
- Listening to reading and discussing texts
- Supporting homework and encouraging independence
A Supportive Environment
Our classrooms are inclusive and welcoming, where every child feels valued and supported. We promote respect, teamwork, and resilience, helping pupils to thrive both academically and socially.
Preparing for the Future
Year 4 plays a vital role in preparing children for the upper years of Key Stage 2. By the end of the year, pupils are more confident, independent, and equipped with the skills needed to succeed in Year 5 and beyond.
