Religious Education (RE) at Sir Martin Frobisher Academy
Understanding Beliefs and Values
At Sir Martin Frobisher Academy, we believe that Religious Education (RE) plays an important role in helping pupils understand the diverse world in which they live. Our aim is to develop respect, curiosity, and understanding of different religions, beliefs, and cultures.
We provide a thoughtful and engaging RE curriculum that encourages pupils to reflect on their own values while learning about the beliefs of others.
Our Approach to RE
We follow the Kapow Primary Religious Education scheme to support high-quality teaching and learning across the school. This ensures clear progression of knowledge and skills from Early Years through to Year 6.
Through this approach, pupils:
- Develop knowledge of a range of religions and worldviews
- Understand key beliefs, practices, and traditions
- Reflect on their own ideas and values
- Show respect and tolerance towards others
- Explore big questions about life and meaning
Lessons are engaging, discussion-based, and encourage thoughtful reflection.
RE in EYFS
In the Early Years Foundation Stage, RE is introduced through the “Understanding the World” area of learning.
Children begin to:
- Learn about different celebrations and traditions
- Explore similarities and differences between people
- Develop respect for others’ beliefs and cultures
Learning is practical, story-based, and linked to children’s experiences.
RE in Key Stage 1
In Years 1 and 2, pupils are introduced to different religions and beliefs in an accessible and engaging way.
Children learn about:
- Key religious stories and figures
- Celebrations and festivals
- Places of worship
- Basic beliefs and practices
They begin to ask questions and share their own ideas.
RE in Key Stage 2
In Key Stage 2, pupils deepen their understanding of religions and worldviews.
Children learn about:
- Major world religions such as Christianity, Islam, Hinduism, and others
- Beliefs, values, and traditions
- The impact of religion on people’s lives
- Similarities and differences between religions
Pupils are encouraged to think critically, ask questions, and reflect on their learning.
Reflection and Discussion
A key part of our RE curriculum is providing opportunities for reflection and discussion. Pupils are encouraged to:
- Share their thoughts and opinions
- Listen respectfully to others
- Explore different viewpoints
- Consider important questions about life and belief
Learning Beyond the Classroom
We enrich our RE curriculum through:
- Celebrating religious festivals
- Exploring artefacts and stories
- Visits to places of worship (where possible)
- Cross-curricular links
These experiences help bring learning to life and deepen understanding.
Supporting RE at Home
Parents and carers can support their child’s learning by:
- Talking about beliefs, values, and traditions
- Exploring different cultures and celebrations
- Encouraging respectful discussion
- Sharing family experiences and perspectives
Assessment and Progress
RE is assessed through ongoing classroom learning. Teachers use:
- Discussions and observations
- Written work and reflections
- Quizzes and knowledge checks
This ensures that pupils develop both knowledge and understanding over time.
