Year 5 at Sir Martin Frobisher Academy
Welcome to Year 5
Year 5 is an exciting and challenging stage in your child’s Key Stage 2 journey at Sir Martin Frobisher Academy. As pupils move into the upper phase of the school, expectations increase and children are encouraged to take greater ownership of their learning.
We provide a supportive and inspiring environment where pupils are motivated to achieve their full potential and develop confidence in their abilities.
Our Learning Approach
In Year 5, we focus on deepening understanding, encouraging independence, and preparing pupils for the demands of Year 6. Lessons are engaging, purposeful, and designed to challenge all learners.
We focus on:
- Developing advanced reading skills, including inference and analysis
- Writing with greater control, creativity, and accuracy
- Strengthening mathematical reasoning and problem-solving
- Building independence, resilience, and responsibility
The Curriculum
Our broad and balanced curriculum includes:
English
Children explore a wide range of high-quality texts, developing their comprehension, vocabulary, and analytical skills. Writing becomes more sophisticated, with pupils experimenting with different styles, genres, and techniques.
Mathematics
Pupils build confidence in all areas of mathematics, including fractions, decimals, and percentages. There is a strong focus on reasoning, problem-solving, and applying knowledge to a variety of contexts.
Science & Topic Work
Children study topics such as space, forces, and properties of materials. Lessons encourage curiosity, investigation, and scientific thinking.
Foundation Subjects
The wider curriculum includes history, geography, art, design technology, computing, music, and physical education, supporting well-rounded development and creativity.
Developing Independence and Responsibility
Year 5 pupils are expected to take increasing responsibility for their learning. We encourage strong organisational skills, independence in completing tasks, and a positive attitude towards challenges.
Reading and Home Learning
Reading remains a key priority, with a focus on comprehension and enjoyment. Pupils are encouraged to read widely and regularly at home.
Parents and carers can support their child by:
- Encouraging regular reading and discussion of texts
- Supporting homework and revision
- Promoting independence and good study habits
A Supportive Environment
We provide a positive and inclusive environment where every child is valued. Pupils are encouraged to show respect, teamwork, and resilience, helping them grow both academically and socially.
Preparing for Year 6
Year 5 plays a crucial role in preparing pupils for their final year of primary school. By the end of the year, children are confident, independent learners ready to meet the challenges of Year 6.
