History Curriculum at Sir Martin Frobisher Academy

Bringing the Past to Life

At Sir Martin Frobisher Academy, we believe that history helps children to understand the world they live in by learning about the past. Our aim is to inspire curiosity about how people lived, how societies have changed, and how historical events have shaped the present.

We provide an engaging and knowledge-rich history curriculum that brings the past to life and encourages pupils to think critically.

Our Approach to History

We follow the Kapow Primary history scheme to support high-quality teaching and learning across the school. This ensures clear progression of knowledge and skills from Early Years through to Year 6.

Through this approach, pupils:

  • Develop a secure understanding of key historical events and periods
  • Build chronological awareness
  • Learn to analyse evidence and sources
  • Understand cause and consequence
  • Explore different perspectives

Lessons are carefully structured to build both knowledge and historical skills over time.

History in EYFS

In the Early Years Foundation Stage, history is introduced through the “Understanding the World” area of learning.

Children begin to:

  • Talk about their own lives and experiences
  • Explore past and present events
  • Understand changes over time
  • Learn about people and communities

Learning is practical, discussion-based, and linked to children’s own experiences.

History in Key Stage 1

In Years 1 and 2, pupils begin to develop an understanding of the past through familiar and engaging topics.

Children learn about:

  • Significant individuals
  • Events beyond living memory
  • Changes within living memory

They begin to:

  • Ask and answer questions about the past
  • Use simple historical sources
  • Develop a sense of chronology

History in Key Stage 2

In Key Stage 2, pupils study a wider range of historical periods and develop a deeper understanding of how the past has shaped the present.

Topics may include:

  • Ancient civilisations
  • Anglo-Saxons
  • The Titanic
  • World War II

Pupils develop their ability to:

  • Place events in chronological order
  • Analyse and interpret historical sources
  • Understand cause, consequence, and change
  • Compare different periods and societies

Historical Skills and Enquiry

A key focus of our history curriculum is developing enquiry skills. Pupils are taught to:

  • Ask thoughtful questions about the past
  • Investigate and interpret evidence
  • Consider different viewpoints
  • Form and justify their own opinions

These skills help children to think critically and develop a deeper understanding of history.

Learning Beyond the Classroom

We enrich our history curriculum through:

  • Educational visits and experiences
  • Use of artefacts and primary sources
  • Storytelling and role play
  • Cross-curricular links

These opportunities help bring history to life and make learning memorable.

Supporting History at Home

Parents and carers can support their child’s interest in history by:

  • Talking about family history and experiences
  • Visiting museums and historical sites
  • Watching documentaries or reading historical books
  • Encouraging curiosity about the past

Assessment and Progress

History is assessed through ongoing classroom activities and outcomes. Teachers use:

  • Observations and discussions
  • Written work and projects
  • Quizzes and knowledge checks

This ensures that pupils build both knowledge and skills progressively.
