Year 6 at Sir Martin Frobisher Academy
Welcome to Year 6
Year 6 is a significant and memorable year at Sir Martin Frobisher Academy. As the final year of primary school, it is a time for pupils to consolidate their learning, take on leadership roles, and prepare for the transition to secondary education.
We aim to make this year both rewarding and enjoyable, supporting every child to achieve their best.
Our Learning Approach
In Year 6, we balance academic challenge with emotional support, ensuring pupils feel confident and well-prepared for the future. Lessons are focused, engaging, and tailored to meet the needs of all learners.
We focus on:
- Securing strong reading, writing, and mathematical skills
- Developing confidence in reasoning and problem-solving
- Encouraging independence, resilience, and self-motivation
- Preparing pupils for secondary school expectations
The Curriculum
Our broad and balanced curriculum includes:
English
Pupils refine their reading and writing skills, developing strong comprehension, inference, and analytical abilities. Writing is purposeful and polished, with a focus on accuracy, structure, and audience.
Mathematics
Children consolidate their understanding of key mathematical concepts, including number, fractions, ratio, and algebra. Problem-solving and reasoning are central to all learning.
Science & Topic Work
Topics may include electricity, the human body, evolution and inheritance. Pupils are encouraged to think critically and work scientifically.
Foundation Subjects
A rich curriculum continues through history, geography, art, design technology, computing, music, and physical education, ensuring a well-rounded education.
Assessment and SATs
Year 6 pupils take part in end-of-Key Stage 2 SATs. These assessments are approached in a supportive and positive way, helping children demonstrate their learning and prepare for the next stage of education.
Leadership and Responsibility
As the oldest pupils in the school, Year 6 children are given opportunities to take on leadership roles and responsibilities. They are role models for younger pupils and contribute positively to the school community.
Reading and Home Learning
Reading continues to be essential, with a focus on comprehension and critical thinking. Pupils are encouraged to read widely and independently.
Parents and carers can support their child by:
- Encouraging regular reading and discussion
- Supporting revision and homework
- Promoting independence and confidence
A Supportive Environment
We ensure that all pupils feel supported, valued, and confident during this important year. Our nurturing environment helps children manage challenges and celebrate their successes.
Preparing for Secondary School
Year 6 prepares pupils for a successful transition to secondary school. By the end of the year, children leave Sir Martin Frobisher Academy as confident, capable, and independent learners, ready for the next stage of their education.
